Of course, these guidelines didn’t have a strong impact as expected and many webmasters chose to ignore them.

The next step to improve search engine optimization, was the banning and penalizing of sites that used black-hat SEO techniques such as keyword stuffing. Google started focusing on what the user needs about information and not ranking sites. In 2005, search engines devised measured to reduce the amount of spammy links and comments on blogs and websites.

In the same year, the personalized search feature was initiated. Here, a user can get information from the internet that has been customized based on his/her browsing history. Google Analytics was launched to assist in measuring traffic and campaigning for return on investment.

A few years later, other search engines were introduced in the market to try and beat out Google. For instance, Microsoft introduced Bing by promising that it would produce better search results than Google and any other search engine before that. Of course, that didn’t turn out as expected because most users had already familiarized themselves with Google.

Well, there were a few notable changes in the search engine algorithms. For instance, Google algorithm was tweaked to allow faster site was crawling, expand the ranking index and also allow for real-time site indexing on the search engine results. Overall, there was a noted improvement in the search engine speed enabling users to get information on query within seconds.

In 2009, with the popularization of social media, Google integrated Twitter feed in the search results. It was the ultimate confirmation that proved that SEO was not just for webmasters alone but anyone else with access to a social media account.

Currently, Google and other search engines have added the suggestions feature where users can always find out what the algorithm can come up with when a particular search query is typed in the search box. However, the feature didn’t affect any search engine optimization efforts. Today, more search engine features have been introduced and upgraded considerably including Google’s Panda and much more.
